Mish Mash Challenge #4: Technique never tried before

Hello everyone.  Another challenge post - can't believe this is the 4th one already!!  This week, we had to pick a technique we have never tried before.  I had some trouble picking, because there are so many I haven't done.  I ended up settling on Spun Sugar nails.  I have never done this before, and didn't do any test runs before I did this mani.  I have to say, although it has some issues, I am really pleased with how this one came out.

These are the problems I encountered:
1) it wastes a lot of polish.
2) you have a small window of opportunity with this - the polish doesn't seem to stay at a consistency for very long where you can get the long strings you need to do this properly.  I got the hang of it more towards the end (with a little practice), but still a little frustrating.
3) Not all polishes are created equal.  I had the best luck with the SinfulColors.  The Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure was difficult.  The Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear wasn't too bad.
4) IT IS FREAKIN' MESSY!!  I am using scotch tape next time (if there is one), let me tell you.

Colors used:
Maybelline Color Show - Porcelain Party (barely off-white)
OPI Matte Top Coat - only used on the nails with the spun sugar
Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Mint Sorbet (pale mint green)
Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Kiwi Bikini (turquoise/jade green)
SinfulColors - Eva So Bright (coral red)
Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure - Water Color (the best sky blue in the world!)
Sally Hansen Xtreme Wear - Breezy Blue (pale baby blue)

I had to wait doing this manicure until after my gym training session, since I don't think this technique has a real long shelf life.  I figured it would be OK, but I didn't count on my trainer torturing me today.  You don't realize how much you use your shoulders and triceps just polishing your nails...well, I realize it NOW.  I was planning on doing this technique on all 10 fingers, but just couldn't do it.  So, six it is.

Will I do this again?  Maybe, but probably only for a fun special occasion.  It can get a little time consuming, and frustrating if you can't get the polish to cooperate.  But this one turned out nice and colorful - I really like it!

Take a look-see at what everyone else decided to try this week - I think this is going to be a fun week for manicures!

See Ya!
Liz

  2. Another good reason for me not to work out if sore muscles might interfere with nail art lol This is a fun look...I like all the colors you chose. You might try petroleum jelly/Vaseline to keep clean up easier next time. I use it when I water marble because the polish won't stick to your skin. It's easier for me than tape, especially when doing my non-dominant hand. This is definitely my favorite challenge so far, just for seeing what everyone else has done...such a creative bunch!!

    1. I remember reading somewhere to use Vaseline or Chapstick. I've been OK with tape when I've been playing around with water-marbling. I'm getting a lot better with my right hand.

    1. The thing I would suggest the most is use inexpensive polish, especially first time doing this. The ones I used weren't that expensive, so I didn't mind too much seeing the wasted bunch on my plastic sheet. I've got plenty of Sinful colors in my stash to use, if I decide to do this again.

  7. These are damn fine sugar spun nails, Liz. If I were you, I'd want to do them again and again, cause you pulled it off! They're not easy to do (said the woman who had AWFULLY SAD RESULTS with her sugar spuns).

    Great job, darlin'!

  9. I love it! I've failed miserably in the past when trying the sugar spun. I guess I picked the wrong polishes :(
